What is the Students’ Council?

A Student Council is a representative structure for students only, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.

The OLIS Students’ Council aims to disseminate the students’ ideas, interests and concerns amongst the teachers and the school management. Often, it also helps raise funds through school activities, that go towards community projects, helping people in need and school embellishment. The OLIS students’ council was set up in 2006 and since then, students have made a big difference within the school.

An election is held every year. A representative from each class is elected by the students and this forms the OLIS Students’ Council. During the first students’ council meeting, the students form the committee, consisting of the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, the Vice- secretary and the PRO. Meetings are held during breaks whenever the need arises.

Why do we need a Students’ Council?

Throughout the years, the OLIS Students’ Council organised various activities such as the Christmas Quiz, the Christmas Card competition, Easter figolli competition, casual days, activity days and the popular Talent show. In addition, the OLIS Students’ Council sponsored school display boards, class notice boards, toilet paper dispensers, and clocks in every classroom. Moreover, the Students’ Council was successful in obtaining the permission for the students to make use of the school garden during break.

The Student Council also aims to help students be inspired and encouraged to value:

  • Equality and diversity
  • New ideas and different points of view.

This is achieved by providing:

  • Respect for everyone in the school
  • Support for younger students
  • Opportunities where the students can build links with other schools.

This will result in:
– improved student
– teacher relationships
– a better school and fulfilled students
