The Secondary School at OLIS comprises Year 7 to Year 11, with three classes per year group. Some students transition from our Primary School, while we also welcome new students in Year 7.
Each class is overseen by a class teacher. In Years 7 and 8, students are cared for by Assistant Head Ms. Rosella Bonnici, while in Years 9 to 11, they are under the supervision of Assistant Head Mr. Sergio Morana. All students are ultimately supervised by Ms. Lucia Mallia, the Head of School for both primary and secondary levels. In Year 8, students select from a range of optional subjects that they will continue to study for the next three years.
Our school environment is founded on the principles of community as established by our foundress, Blessed Caterina Troiani, a Franciscan nun who founded the Franciscan Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, now a global religious order. Beyond academic achievement, we prioritize the well-being of both students and staff. Our students receive a well-rounded education that includes academic subjects and opportunities to develop their character through drama, art, physical education, and PSCD.
For students experiencing difficulties, we offer guidance and counseling services. In serious cases, the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO), Mr. Sergio Morana, liaises with various professionals provided by the Kurja to support students and families in need.
Pastoral Groups at OLIS
Our school offers various pastoral groups that meet during break time, providing students with additional opportunities for growth and engagement:
- Active Hearts Club: Promotes physical activity during school hours, including break time.
Book Club: Members share books they have enjoyed reading. - Class Monitors: Class leaders act as intermediaries between teachers and students, chosen from students with the highest positive points from the previous year.
- Crossing Borders: Empowers students to enact Blessed Caterina Troiani’s missionary vision through research and outreach to Malta’s minority groups.
- Debate Team: Teaches students to present arguments based on factual evidence and present them professionally.
- EkoSkola: A group of students collaborating to enhance the school environment, with members chosen by their peers.
- German Club: Offers students the chance to learn German and explore German culture in a fun and interactive way.
- Rosary Club: Brings students together to pray and learn how to set an altar for praying, including making rosary beads.
- Student Council: Consists of elected students who actively participate in making the school a better place.
- The Voice and Photography Club: For students passionate about journalism and photography, contributing to the school blog and attending photography lessons.
- Other pastoral committees include: Behaviour Management Team and the Chaplaincy Team
We believe that discipline is integral to student well-being. The Behaviour Management Team ensures proper conduct and guides students in their behavior, while the Chaplaincy Team, including Fr. Chris Bugeja and dedicated educators, focuses on character formation.
